LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – We can expect to hear a lot of booms and pops this weekend as many will be celebrating New Year’s Eve but fireworks can also trigger fear and nervousness in some.

The loud noises that sound like gunfire and other blasts can trigger post traumatic stress disorder for veterans.

For some veterans who spent time in combat, the sounds of exploding fireworks take them back to the front lines of war.

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs estimates 20 percent of military members who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan suffer from the condition in a given year and research indicates that number keeps rising.
